Microsoft, Google, Apple and other firms have sponsored lecture series in which science fiction writers give talks to employees and then meet privately with developers and research departments. Perhaps nothing better demonstrates the close tie between science fiction and technology today than what is called “design fiction”—imaginative works commissioned by tech companies to model new ideas. Some corporations hire authors to create what-if stories about potentially marketable products.
'How America’s Leading Science Fiction Authors Are Shaping Your Future' door Eilleen Gunn.

The mathematical modeling of society is made possible, according to Pentland, by the innate tractability of human beings. We may think of ourselves as rational actors, in conscious control of our choices, but most of what we do is reflexive. Our behavior is determined by our subliminal reactions to the influence of other people, particularly those in the various peer groups we belong to. “The power of social physics,” he writes, “comes from the fact that almost all of our day-to-day actions are habitual, based mostly on what we have learned from observing the behavior of others.” Once you map and measure all of a person’s social influences, you can develop a statistical model that predicts that person’s behavior, just as you can model the path a billiard ball will take after it strikes other balls.

Nicolas Carr - 'The Limits of Big Data' in MIT Technology Review.

It is above all because they are a living and present form of the festive, the revival of the Dionysiac in a West coming to its end, that raves are now being demonized. Everything is being done to suppress them, either by simply banning them or by moving them into clubs or discothèques, even into halls intended for traditional spectacles, thus neutralizing them—authorizing them as they are integrated into an economic circuit where they can only be gradually transformed a reified into spectacle and leisure. This is without a doubt where the greatest threat to the techno movement lies, where it risks losing its soul, so to speak, becoming another spectacle just like the other, something we are already seeing. The worst is not being banned, but being turned into spectacle.

This is how something that starts out free and alive, evolving on the edge of a society to which it brings otherness, is always absorbed by that society and reified into commodity, specifically into commodity spectacle. The Situationists showed how spectacle become part of a general economy of representation within which they function like a product meant to be consumed and from which the maximum profit is to be derived. Through its recognition, institutionalization, and integration into traditional festive spaces, techno is becoming commodified by applying to it the same recipes used in rock concerts: a greater centrality or frontality of the stage, a star system or spectaculartity applied to DJs, time limitations, high prices, and so on.

Michel Gaillot – Multiple Meaning Techno: An Artistic and Political Laboratory of the Present (1998)

"Music criticism has gotten really weird."

In this way, poptimism embraces the familiar as a means of keeping music criticism relevant. Click culture creates a closed system in which popular acts get more coverage, thus becoming more popular, thus getting more coverage. But criticism is supposed to challenge readers on occasion, not only provide seals of approval.

In this light, poptimism can be seen as an attempt to resuscitate the unified cultural experience of the past, when we were all, at least in theory, listening together to “Sgt. Pepper’s” or “Thriller.” The dissolution of a shared musical mainstream means that my Speedy Ortiz or Ka may be gobbledygook to someone whose musical hero is Sky Ferreira. But the splintering of tastes should be celebrated, not treated as further cause for doubling down on our focus on a few familiar stars or sounds. Let a thousand Haims bloom!
